A Mississippi group is trying to get the word out about grants available to fortify homes to minimize hurricane damage, which could mean big insurance discounts.
The Windstorm Mitigation Coordinating Council recently met with the Sun Herald to discuss the program called Coastal Retrofit Mississippi. It's funded with $27 million from FEMA and it will cover about 90 percent of the cost to retrofit Hancock, Harrison and Jackson county homes with hurricane shutters, hurricane straps and other enhancements.
Coastal Retrofit Mississippi is a division of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Mike Ferdinand, who heads the Biloxi-based CRM, said it's time to act to keep homes safe in the coming storm season.

Bay-Waveland Habitat building Fortified homes
Disaster-Smart Providing Evlautions
By ANITA LEE — calee@sunherald.com
BAY ST. LOUIS -- Heather Adams and her two children watched the sturdy cedar home built by her grandparents tear apart in Hurricane Katrina, forcing them to flee in the driving wind to a relative's brick home nearby.
She knows better than most the value of the home she hopes to move her family into in March. They will occupy the first house for which Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity expects to receive Fortified certification. The certification qualifies the house for wind insurance discounts and also means it should withstand winds of 150 miles per hour.

Mississippi House Passes Insurance Discounts for Strong Homes
By JEFF AMY | March 15, 2012
The Mississippi House passed a bill Tuesday to require insurance companies to offer discounts on costly hurricane coverage in five southern counties, including three on the coast.
Discounts are required by July 2013. They would go to single-family homes and some manufactured homes for meeting strong-house standards in the current building code, those established by the Institute for Business and Home Safety or other state-approved standards.
The idea is that a roof that’s less subject to leaks, or a garage door that’s been reinforced so it won’t blow in will prevent damage during a hurricane. That means the homeowner and the insurer will see lower financial losses, and the insurer can charge lower rates.

State Farm to Offer Storm Mitigation Credits in Mississippi
State Farm will offer discounts in Mississippi beginning May 1 for homes and rental property strengthened against wind damage.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney told The Sun Herald that he approved State Farm’s plan to offer the mitigation discounts. They will apply to new construction and retrofits to older homes.
Discounts range from 8 to 30 percent, depending on the location of a home, condominium unit or rental property and construction techniques used.
Chaney said the highest discount is available only to policyholders south of Interstate 10 who meet strict guidelines for new construction, including hurricane mitigation measures, set by the insurance industry’s Institute for Business and Home Safety.
